Each year, over 8 million metric tons of plastic pollute our oceans, with ghost gear—largely discarded fishing nets—comprising up to 70% of this pollution. Sea Cocoon, inspired by this year’s theme, “dawn,” transforms this waste into a sculptural installation symbolizing renewal. Seeking to partner with Canada’s Ghost Gear Fund and modeled after the resilient chiton—an efficient cleaner within marine ecosystems—the installation’s layered shell evokes both protection and regeneration, inviting visitors to reconnect with the ocean and enjoy the sea view while sheltered by its debris. By making marine pollution visible and demonstrating its transformation, Sea Cocoon fosters collective responsibility and highlights the tangible steps needed for a sustainable dawn.
